Messali al-Hajj (d. 1974) was the first Algerian nationalist leader to vocally call for Algeria’s independence from France. Biography
Messali al-Hajj joined the French army early in his life. After moving to France in 1923, he married a French woman. Mustafa came back to Algeria, driven by his fervent desire for an independent Algeria. In 1937, he founded the Party of the Algerian People (Parti du Peuple Algérien, PPA), a milestone that marked the beginning of the organized nationalist agitation against French colonial rule.
After Algeria gained its independence, Messali al-Hajj retreated to France where he authored his memoirs, articulating the struggles and victories of the independence movement. His final resting place is in Tlemcen, Algeria.
